A pair of young men have suffered severe head injuries after riding their mini bikes.
Chief Inspector Paul Goundry, of Durham Police has warned against buying children mini bikes for christmas and says it is only a matter of time before there is another fatality due to these bikes.
Goundry spoke out after the two collided with a car on the so called 'dangerous' machines.
The accident victims were aged 22 and 17 and not wearing helmets when they collided with the Vauxhall Cavalier on Tyne Road, Stanley at 10.15 pm on Friday, the bike was not registered and had no lights.
The pair were rushed to University Hospital of North Durham, where they underwent emergency treatment. The car driver was uninjured.
Both victims are classed as stable but police have described them as very poorly.
